右あれば左あり　For Every Left There Is Also Right

世界的に著名なベトナム出身の禅僧ティク・ナット・ハンは蓮の茎を水平に持って聴衆に問いかけます。
　「この蓮の茎には右と左があります。この左半分を切り取ったらどうなりますか。」当然のことながら半分になった蓮の茎にも右と左があります。
　彼は「此あるがゆえに彼あり、彼あるがゆえに此あり」という縁起の法を実例を用いて説いているのです。現在の政治の世界では、相手の粗を探しだし、ことさらに言いつのることで、自らの優位を強調して、互いを排斥しようとしているように見えます。
　おそらく、右派が左派を取り除くことができたとしても、きっと新たな対立が生ずるに違いありません。結局、右は左があるから存在し、その逆も事実なのです。つまるところ、保守派は革新派に、革新派は保守派に是々非々で歩み寄るしかないのです。
　また、右と左が一致してひとつになること、すなわち、すべての政治家の考えがおなじになることが理想とはいえません。
　違いがあるからこそ進歩もありうるのです。「右あれば左あり、左あれば右あり」違っていて当たり前、違っているからこそありがたい。
　そのことを前提として大らかに生きよと、仏教は説くのです。

　For Every Left There Is Also Right

　World famous Vietnamese Zen priest Thich Nhat Hanh holds the stem of a lotus horizontally and asks the listeners, "There is a right and a left on this lotus stem, so what will happen if you cut off this left half?"
　Naturally the lotus stem which is halved still has right and left ends. He is using the example to preach the law of Dependent Origins, "The one thing exists because of the other, and without the one thing then the other also ceases to exist."
　In the current political world, it seems that one party looks for ways to reject the other party by showing their own advantage in relation to the shortcomings of the other party. Even supposing that the right wing can get rid of the left wing, then a new confrontation between the divisions within the right wing will arise.
　After all, the right exists in relation to the left, and vice versa. In the end, the conservatives must innovate, the innovators just have to step closer to the conservatives.
　Also, it is not ideal for the right and the left to be united as one; that is, for the ideas of all politicians to be the same. Only because there is a difference can there be progress. "There is a left if there is a right; there is a right if there is a left." Of course there are differences relative to each other; we should be thankful for differences. Buddhism preaches about living fully without fretting about the small differences in these mutually dependent relationships of left and right.
