一向にいきる Depending too much on words

Depending too much on words

"There seems to be nothing to help with knee pain for recreational walking," the 40-something male orthopedic specialist replied to my suggestion about lack of exercise being the reason. From his knowledge, he rejected the idea that "exercise is good for your health" when one’s cartilage wears out through aging.

If you think about it, it is not uncommon for those who exercise to have trouble with their bodies. So you have to wonder if exercise leads to health, or health makes possible exercise. Overthinking this cause-and-effect relationship can keep you awake at night. So in some cases you could say something like plain old common sense does not always hold the answer.

St. Honen teaches us, 一文不知の愚鈍の身にして、ただ一向に念仏すべし, take a position of complete ignorance and throw yourself totally into the Nenbutsu prayer (don’t look around for answers, just pray the Nenbutsu on your own)."
Interestingly there is a similar teaching in Soto Zen. Dogen declares 只管打坐, don’t depend on words, just be still (zazen meditating alone is all you need for your truth).

一向and只管 are pronounced "ikko" and "shikan" respectively, in their Chinese readings, but by using the Japanese reading they both can identically be read "hitasura" (note that all Kanjis have both Chinese reading and Japanese reading). When I saw this, I almost clapped my hands from this unexpected revelation. It came as a sudden recognition of kinship between the terms.

Using words is what makes us human. They make possible many advanced things not found in other animals. In exchange for this, words also make possible the many troubles that people struggle with.

"By chanting the Nenbutsu we can cleanse the dirt accumulated in our hearts from many past sinful deeds," the "Butsumyo-kyo," a Buddhist sutra, preaches. That is what we do at the Butsumyo-e, at the close of each year, praying over and over again.
By the way, what I described at the orthopedist’s was about ten years ago. I went through knee injections and heat therapy for about two months. However, there was no sign of improvement. So I stopped treatments and had to spend my days with stiffness. But after about half a year, my knee pain disappeared into thin air as if it had all been a lie.
