(1) Heart of Compassion ? dedicated to Tanaka Ren (2)
Hearts of Mercy -Dedicated to Ren Tanaka(1)
Dedicated to Ren Tanaka (1)
Last year, three-year-old Tanaka Ren-chan disappeared suddenly when his father left the car unattended for about 10 minutes. It happened in Echizen-city on December 9th at the ?Kami-Ota parking lot near the Yoshinose River.
In spite of efforts by the police, fire fighters, and local residents, and the distress of the family, it was not until more than a month later, on January 19th, that little Ren was found. The place was near the mouth of the Kuzuryu River in Mikuni, 40 km away, as the crow flies.
During this time, posters were displayed everywhere in the city, and flyers were put in newspapers to circulate around town. Day after day, so many people were concerned about little Ren and his family.
People's reactions were varied when little Ren was found. The people who had been thinking about the possibility of survival after kidnapping etc. could not hide their disappointment when this hope was dashed.
On the other hand, more than a few people were relieved that the body was recovered. Otherwise, his family would not be able to find closure, and the uncertainty in their minds would last forever.
When the body was discovered, the father's words of "I am sorry, little Ren," and the grandfather’s words of “I wonder if you did all this on your own,” moved people’s hearts. So probably there were more than a few of us who cried.
What could it be about little Ren’s disappearance and discovery that touched our hearts so deeply, I wonder?
"Mercy" is one word we have. The dictionary says, "in Buddhist terminology, Buddha and Bodhisattvas relieve the sufferings of sentient beings and put them at ease" (burdens removed; comfort given).
Even without being Buddha or Bodhisattva, we are also provided with merciful hearts. It is probably for that reason that many people thought about little Ren and his family and wanted to "relieve their suffering; making things go easily for them" (burdens removed; comfort given). In addition, those thoughts inspired people to go on searching, and led to prayers that little Ren might be found.
As you pray for peace of little Ren’s soul, there is something we cannot forget. It is what little Ren’s brief life has shown about us being the children of Buddha, even in these harsh times we live in.
