人工知能(AI)と「一文不知」AI and Ichi-mon-fu-chi

実業家の孫正義はYouTubeの「シンギュラリティによる全知全能のAIがもたらす未来の世界」の中で、近未来においてAlの英知が「全人類の英知の総和の1万倍を超え、今まで人類が解決できなかった難題を、超知性の全知全能マシンが、人類の代わりに解決してくれる」との展望を披露しています。
　ところで、脳科学者である茂木健一郎は、AIがクオリアを持つことに懐疑的です。「クオリア」とは色の赤さや青さ、痛みや甘さなどの主観的感覚です。「脳とクオリア」という著書の中で、彼は「(クオリアという)質感を言葉、より一般的に言えば『シンボル』で表現しきれないことは、質感に関する最も基本的な事実だ」と、述べています。
　ChatGPTなどの生成AIはオンライン上の文字、画像、音声などのデータを大量に取り込み、高度の情報加工技術を用いて、ユーザーにさまざまなサービスを提供しています。
　生成AIの元になるのが文字、画像、音声などのシンボルであり、茂木氏が言うようにクオリアがシンボルで表現できないのであれば、生成AIがクオリアを取り扱うことは不可能で、当前、それがクオリアを持つことはありそうもないことです。
　つまり、AI自体が喜んだり、悲しんだりする、あるいは、自己増殖したり、人類を支配したりという野望を抱く心配はなさそうです。
　さりとて、Alが今までにない強力な道具であることに変わりはありません。そうなると、孫氏の言うように「全知全能マシンが、さまざまな問題を解決してくれる」などと、のんきに構えてはいられません。AIの超知性を悪用する人はきっと現れます。
　では進化し続けるAIに、人はどう向き合えばいいのでしょうか。法律などでAIの利用に一定の歯止めをかけること、間違った使い方を監視し、必要に応じてペナルティーを課すことなど、一般的な対処法の他に、仏教の「智慧」に学ぶという方法があります。
　「智慧」はここでは仏教の教えや実践から生まれる深い理解や洞察力という意味で用います。この意味での智慧は。AIの知恵とは大きく異なっています。
　禅は「不立文字」、悟りは文字や言語などでは伝えることはできないと説きます。また、法然上人は「一文不知」、経典から得られる知識にとらわれずに、ひたすら阿弥陀仏の救済を信じて念仏することを勧めます。
　仏教は文字や言語などを超越して、直観的な価値観の変容を可能にします。仮にそれをBI(Buddhism Intelligence)と呼ぶとすれば、私にはBIこそAIの活用、さらには人類を含めた衆生の安寧のために必須のことのように思われます。

AI and 一文不知, Ichi-mon-fu-chi

 　In his YouTube video "The Future World of Almighty AI through Singularity," the businessman Masayoshi Son presented his vision of the near future. He suggests that the wisdom of Al will exceed 10K times the sum of the wisdom of all mankind, and superintelligent, omniscient machines will solve difficult problems that mankind could not have solved before.
　By the way, Ken’ Ichiro Mogi, a brain scientist, is skeptical that AI has qualia. Qualia are subjective sensations, such as the redness or blueness of a color, or pain or sweetness. In his book "Brain and Qualia," he states, "It is the most basic fact about qualia that it cannot be described by words or, more generally, by 'symbols’.
　Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, takes large amounts of online text, image, and audio data and uses advanced information processing techniques to provide a variety of services to users.
　The source of generative AI is symbols such as text, images, and audio, and if qualia cannot be represented by symbols, as Mogi says, then it is impossible for generative AI to handle qualia, therefore, it is unlikely that it will ever have qualia.
　In other words, we don’t have to worry that the AI itself will have feelings, such as happiness or sadness, not to mention that it will have ambitions to self-propagate or dominate humanity.
　Nevertheless, the fact remains that Al is an unprecedentedly powerful tool. If that’s the case, we can't just sit back and hope that an omniscient and omnipotent machine will solve all our problems, as Mr. Son says. There will surely be those who will exploit and abuse AI's superintelligence.
　So how should people deal with the ever-evolving AI? In addition to general measures, such as imposing certain restrictions on the use of AI by law, monitoring its misuse, and imposing penalties, when necessary, there also is guidance from Buddhist wisdom(智慧).
　Wisdom(智慧) is used here in the sense of deep understanding and insight that comes from Buddhist teachings and practices. Wisdom(智慧) in this sense is very different from AI wisdom(知恵).
　Zen teaches 不立文字, fu-ryu-mon-ji, that enlightenment cannot be conveyed through letters or language. Jodo-shu founder, reverend Honen also advises 一文不知, ichi-mon-fu-chi, that is, being free from the knowledge of Buddhist scripture, and believing in the salvation of Amitabha Buddha and taking faith from chanting Amitabha’s name in earnest.
　Buddhism transcends written texts, language, etc., and allows for an intuitive transformation of values. If we call it BI (Buddhist Intelligence), it seems to me that BI is essential for the utilization of AI and for the peace of sentient beings, particularly human beings.
